Justice Ward Hunt
Here is Justice Ward Hunt of the U.S. Supreme Court. While traveling on the circuit in 1873, he presided over Susan B. Anthony's case. In rejecting Anthony's claim that the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments granted her the right to vote, Hunt stressed that voting was a privilege conferred by the states, and had nothing to do with U.S. citizenship. The Supreme Court unanimously confirmed Hunt's argument in a separate decision two years later. It wouldn't be overturned until 1919.
