Abraham Lincoln wrote this letter October 19, 1860 to 11-year old Grace Bedell, in response to a letter she wrote him, asking him to grow a beard. In Grace’s letter (written October 15, 1860, she told Lincoln that he should grow a beard. She wrote, “I have got 4 brother’s [sic] and part of them will vote for you any way and if you will let your whiskers grow I will try and get the rest of them to vote for you you would look a great deal better for your face is so thin. All the ladies like whiskers and they would tease their husband’s [sic] to vote for you and then you would be President.” Lincoln met Grace Bedell as President-elect February 16, 1861 in Westfield, Illinois where he greeted her with a full beard.
