Check out the winners and runners-up in NATURE’s Why I Love Cats and Dogs Photo Contest. The photographers of the top five photos will receive a copy of Why We Love Cats and Dogs on DVD. Congratulations to our winners, and thank you to everyone to entered and helped make this contest a big success. The judges had to make a lot of very difficult decisions. - First Place: Quiet Wisdom
"This photo of my lovely cat Stella was taken last spring. I had been working long hours, and hadn't been able to spend as much time with her as I had wished. When Stella gave me her 'where have you been?' face, I had to grab my camera. Stella is my constant reminder to live in the moment, love unconditionally and partake in the occasional nap. I donate money from my photo sales to www.felinesinc.org." -- Ingrid from Chicago, IL
- Second Place: Enjoying Life to the Fullest
"I took my dog Annie for a hike on beautiful Roan Mountain, on the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. The weather that day was great, and I loved taking pictures of the clouds and surrounding mountain scenery. Annie's favorite activity is to go hiking, and she showed her excitement by rolling in the warm grass." -- Natalie Elam from Lawndale, NC
- Third Place: Kushi with his watery eyes
"Kushi is actually just one of our two cats. We love them both dearly. This picture was taken when I caught my then seven-month-old cat, Kushi, taking a nap on my arm chair. I remember calling Kushi's name, at which point he turned around and gazed at me with these adorable watery eyes - I immediately picked up my camera to capture the look on his face. As a cat that sometimes acts like a dog, Kushi loves to greet us at the front door when we come home, and drag his toy wand up or down the stairs to let us know that he wants to play." -- Shirley from Ottawa, ON, Canada
- Fourth Place: Cat's Eye View
"My seven-year-old cat, Katie, maneuvers among the branches of a tree in my backyard in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Standing directly under her with my camera, I managed to capture her acrobatic capabilities as well as her curious expression about my presence beneath her." -- Danielle Millé from Fort Smith, AR
- Fifth Place: Maru
"Maru, a purebred Alaskan Husky, belongs to Rangel Lorenzo, a waiter at Cafe Bahia in Yelapa, Jalisco, Mexico. On this morning, Maru was sitting on the town's pier watching the fishing boats and licking his chops." -- Gavin Ehringer from Colorado Springs, CO
- Runner-Up: Charlotte
"This picture of our new puppy Charlotte was taken in my backyard a couple of months ago. I was standing up on a wall looking down on her to keep her from jumping all over me. Focusing was the most difficult part because she does not stay still for a second." -- Freda Herrera from San Marcos, CA
- Runner-Up: Coco the Calico
"My curious little kitten Calico." -- Leslie Andrews
- Runner-Up: Audrey
"This is a picture of my friend's beautiful dog, Audrey, who is now sadly no more. The picture was taken in Chennai, India in November 2007. It was a beautiful windy day by the beach!" -- Arjuna Ravikumar from Orlando, FL
- Runner-Up: Sleeping Beauties
"I took this snapshot of my pitbull Jada and my cat Naomi (with Stuffbear Joey) at my house. Not an easy task, because if I had moved to get my camera, they would have all woke up. So I slowly had to reach for my cellphone with built-in camera to take this shot." -- SPC Kerstin Thompson from Fort Campbell, KY
- Runner-Up: Simply Lola
"My eight-month-old kitten, Lola, is bird watching. I took it about three weeks ago. She is the love of my life." -- Nikita Patel from San Francisco, CA
- Runner-Up: I Love You Mommy!
"These are my two rough collies Pepper (left) and Murphy (right). Pepper (9 years old) had just come to live her retirement years with us and is Murphy's (3 years old) mother. They bonded instantly and are totally inseparable. Murphy is comforting Pepper after she had her teeth cleaned. We quickly learned that the only thing better than a collie is two collies! It's amazing the amount of joy and laughter these wonderful dogs have brought to our home. We love them dearly!" -- Dawn Rasor from Greenville, MI
- Runner-Up: PJ
"Our three-year-old tabby, Prince John, lounging on the back of the couch." -- Emily P. from North Berwick, ME
- Runner-Up: Mandy's Snow Day
"This is a picture of one-year-old sheltie Mandy taking the day off after the snow storm in Omaha. She is searching for the rabbits that left snow trails in her yard." -- Michael Jones from Omaha, NE
- Runner-Up: Spooky Lemon
"This is a photo of our cat, Spooky, in our backyard lemon tree one lazy Sunday afternoon. Spooky is an indoor cat, and I occasionally let her out for sun and fresh air under my watchful eye. This summer afternoon shot is of her playing hide-n-seek with me in our lemon tree." -- Julie Thomas from Sacramento, CA

I’ve always (65 years now) had a dog. Every one of them have been unique characters that showed me how to love and be loyal. As much as it hurts to lose them when they grow old or a terrible accident occurs, I know that the next one will have something special for me once again in a different way. It takes a time to grieve, but it s worth it for all the love these beautiful animals have to bring into my house. I love and remember each and every one of them and can only hope that heaven is where I get to see them all again. My current doggie-person is a devoted Aussie who puts her head in my lap when I cry, and every day reminds me it is time to play. If that isn’t family…what is?
