Sir David and researcher Dennis Hasselquist, of the University of Lund, paddle out to the reedbeds of Lake Kvismarren in Sweden to hear the sounds of the Great Reed warbler. Pumped with testosterone and eager to find mates, the male birds sing for 20 hours a day. The more complex their song, measured by increasing numbers of musical beats or syllables, the more likely they are to attract the opposite sex.
