Survival Skills

Language Arts
Grades 6-8

Survival in the Artic demands great skills from the Inuit nation that populates this area. In this lesson, students will learn about the challenges Inuit people face as they attempt to teach their children about the old ways of surviving in an ever-changing world. Students will research the Inuit history and culture and create an in-depth news report based on what they learned about the Inuit Nation.

Shark Attack

Language Arts, Science
Grades 6-8

In this lesson students will learn about a complex and often-misunderstood animal, the white shark. Students will think critically about a set of shark facts and predict whether the statements are true or false, describe a year in the life of a white shark living in the Red Triangle, and create a public service announcement promoting either the protection of humans from sharks or the protection of sharks from humans.

Survival in Antarctica*PBL

Science, Cooperative Learning, Geography
Grades 6-8

The NATURE program UNDER ANTARCTIC ICE takes students to a desolate place they'll probably never visit on their own: Antarctica! In this lesson, students will experience the harshness of the climate, explore the variety of interesting wildlife, and learn about human survival on the "frozen continent." Using a problem-based approach in cooperative teams, students will participate in various in-class design challenges. Each design challenge will address one of the difficulties faced by either scientists or other organisms as they try to survive the harsh climate of Antarctica.

Bandhavgarh: The Tiger's Domain

Science, Language Arts, The Arts
Grades 6-8

In the heart of India, Bandhavgarh, a once powerful dynasty, is now a protected wilderness area. It is a place where royal Bengal tigers roam freely amongst the ruins of abandoned palaces and temples. In this lesson, students will design a project to educate people about the area and to entice them to visit Bandhavgarh. They will also write a script for a play that combines the human and natural history elements of Bandhavgarh.

Cloud in the Classroom

Language Arts, Science
Grades 6-8

In this lesson students will view the NATURE program CLOUD: WILD STALLION OF THE ROCKIES. They will conduct a survey, learn about the history and treatment of wild horses in the United States, create a mock news broadcast, research wildlife photography, learn about horse behavior, engage in reading and writing activities, conduct Internet research, and create an artistic response to the film.
