Snow is important to the Yosemite ecosystem because it forms a natural reservoir. The Sierra Nevada supply approximately 60 percent of the water supply for the state of California and approximately 30 to 50 percent of that water starts out as snow. Yosemite hydrologist Jim Roche explains how climate warming of 3 to 5 degrees is likely to upset this natural order.
