Next Week’s News: Baby puppies edition

Andy Borowitz is finally back from two weeks at the World Cup in South Africa — the land of vuvuzelas. And this week on Next Week’s News, he takes a look at the terrible performance of the English team.

And by English team, we mean the top executives at BP, of course.

I have a spare Rottweiler puppy to donate. He’s fine as long as he’s muzzled. Does Tony need a puppy?

WHOA…did Jay to the M diss you, Andy,…at the beginning?? Meach: “Freshly back…sadly…from South Africa…” Dude is harsh! Glad you are back from South Africa…and that you survived the attack of the wild vuvuzelas…(louder)…I said, “VUVUZELAS”. I think the new BP campaign is working…Me: “awwww, puppies…:):):)….what oil?????????” Lovin’ “Next Week’s News”!!!!!! (almost as much as the baby puppies!) :)

Please stop this segment. The whole program is doing a very good job so far at doing what PBS does better than anyone else: sober reporting on public affairs. I watch the Daily show when I want satire, Borowitz’s little tidbit at the end of Need to Know just makes me cringe. It is completely out of place. Please stop. Leave satire to those that are good at it. Despite what your market research says, PBS is not going to increase its viewership (capture the Daily Show demographic) by throwing on a 5-minute oddball segment at the end of each Need to Know Progam.

I think Andy is really funny fellow, but this is the equivalent of burying the lead. The “Baby Puppies” thing was funny, but did we need to get through 75% of boring set-up (where was that transition from World Cup to BP again?) just to get to that joke? It’s time you scrap the “Next Week’s News” template and just do “A Few Minutes Too Many with Andy Borowitz” or — cleverer — “On Borowitz Time”. I think you’ll get more humor hits per second. PBS needs humor desperately, but it needs to be done right.

Andy Borowitz is a very funny guy and I don’t know about you, but for me too much sober news is just like every other program…..comedy is good. Andy is insightful and funny. Don’t let him go to Florida. LOL
