First Look: How the story of Cleopatra resonates today

The image we have of Cleopatra, the last queen of Egypt, is of a legendary seductress, who used her feminine wiles for military and political gain.

But as the Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Stacy Schiff reveals in her new book “Cleopatra: A Life,” much of what we know about her is untrue. Schiff redefines Cleopatra as a politically resourceful strategist who allied herself with the powerful Roman leaders Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, in the hopes of securing her empire’s continued existence.

Need to Know’s Jon Meacham sat down with Schiff recently and asked her: What resonance, if any, does Cleopatra’s story have for women in the 21st Century?
