Peter Sagal’s advice for Democrats

This week, Republicans in the House of Representatives made good on their promise to vote to repeal health care reform. Democrats in the Senate have vowed to block the new legislation, but one thing is certain: the battle is not over. On this week’s edition of “Just Ask,” our own Peter Sagal is offering some counterintuitive advice to Democrats.

Dear Need to Know:

We’re a political party, and we get beaten all the time. Big things, small things, every time we pick up our head we get it handed to us. How do we finally turn things around and start to win?

Signed,

Dejected Donkey

Dear Dejected:

You don’t want to win. You think you do, but you don’t. You won two years ago, you won everything, and what did that get you? It made you nervous, uneasy, unhappy. There was nobody left to hate, so you went back to hating yourselves.

So now that you’ve been beaten a few times, and it looks like you’re going to get beaten repeatedly for the next two years, you think you want to win. But what you really want to do is fight. And then, having fought, lose nobly. Think about it. What’s more exciting? When your side dominates their side with overwhelming force and veto-proof majorities? No, because then you have to be in charge. You have to be the boss, and everybody hates the boss.

You want to be the rebels, the guerilla army forced into the mountains, the captured spy with the smuggled plans the guy who shouts “Freedom!” while being eviscerated. You want to keep the drama going, to win some victories here and there, but only symbolic ones, that strike fear into the hearts of your enemies but never actually stop them.

And then you want them, in the final act, to absolutely crush you, to scatter your forces and crush your hopes. So that then, in the finale, as you are just about to face the final defeat,  all of sudden the very planet itself rises up to fight alongside you! You overcome the filibuster against the Truth and Goodness Act of 2011 with the votes of all the woodland creatures! And everybody’s happy! And you give medals, and you have a big party, and you feel really great … and then, in a couple of months, you’ll be writing to me again.

I got a great idea for your next one. It involves you just giving up and letting them have the Ark of the Covenant. Just wait until they open it.

You just demonized most of Americans by implying they are Nazis! Shame on you. It has been great to watch Democrats try to run things and show who they really are, once they were in charge. Yes, the Constitution does mean something and American is done with Pelosi’s attitude of “we will tell you what is in the bill after we pass it. Democrats have forgotten who they work for. Your little segment is a perfect example as to why I believe NPR and PBS needs to be defunded. The only way you can get out your liberal agenda is through publicly funded (Americans paying taxed) programs.

For my money the counterintuitive advice I give to democrats at this time Is let the Republicans go for it so to speak whowever they wish
    1) let them lose the direct repeal of health care or let Obama veto it with the comment loud and clear come up with improvements to the law and how 32 m uninsured can be covered we can talk/debate and more than likely come up with compromises that is better for everyone.
If the want to try and modify the conditions of DADT law to add in more conditions let them use time on that, and Obama can veto and say these were CIC, Sec defense, and Chief of the armed forces decisions voted on/passed in both houses.
Same for financial reform and the recovery act, whats the cost of repeal first, and eliminate any outright repeal, but ask for suggestions to improve.
They wont give up they will go for them all and ignore Jobs, the economy which will cost Republicans dearly because minorty leader Pelosi will be all the time presenting
    1) Bills to help the economy
    2) Bills based on the Presidents commission report to reduce the deficit and debt and cuts to government spending. On this latter be positive of the over 100 ideas from Repuiblicans am sure thyere are some The democrats can support, Put those thru first and debate in cimmittees the others for compromises or alternate ideas.
The key is for the DNC and House reps to shout these loudly from the floor of the house and senate ( filibuster only if absolutely needed) and get the publicity machine working, especially asking why so many changes to history are the priority over jobs and the economy.
Obama should demand his new Jobs committe comes up with regular reports ( every 3 months based on industry sector reviews) and the start point should be Energy and then transport infrastructure.
In other word spend Minimal time fighting Republican ideology and extremism and concentrate on Jobs balancing the budget , debt reduction ,and tax reform. Make tax reform the key issue in 2012, if the deficit commissions ideas are resisted as is likely by Republicans.
Thier plans do not address the majorities concerns.
    Just a thought.

I just happened to catch this commentary by Peter Sagal — and was astounded by his glib and hateful diatribe… You want to give advice Pete? Why not suggest that Americans truly fulfill their obligation as citizens and do their research, think critically, support their candidates and fight for their causes as their conscience inspires –
I could accept your style if this were intended to be pure satire — but you missed the mark. I believe you think all Americans are this base.

Great…Repubicans are Nazis. Can’t wait for PBS to get defunded. I’m so sick of this crap from the left. Just for once, please, recognize your leftist bias and agenda and thank all the conservative tax payers who help fund it. I’m sure Peter Segal can’t even recognize how offensive his bit was. What? Common, man….its satire, you know, Rebublicans are Nazis and you know, their faces should melt off…RDRR…its funny….ha ha ha…can’t wait until I don’t pay a dime to PBS.
