Choose which of the games you want to play: short, medium, or long.

Click on the icon of the game you want to play, and the game will pop up in a new browser window.

The short game has six rounds of six questions each. The medium game has nine rounds of six questions each. The long game has 12 rounds of six questions each.

Each round takes place in one of six time periods between 1609 and 2000: 1609 to 1825, 1825 to 1865, 1865 to 1898, 1898 to 1914, 1914 to 1931, and 1931 to 2000. (These time periods correspond to the six episodes of NEW YORK: A DOCUMENTARY FILM.) The rounds appear in random order.

Since the short game is six rounds long, you'll visit every time period once; the medium game is nine rounds long, so you'll visit each time period once and three of them twice; the long game is 12 rounds long so you'll visit each time period twice.

Allow the game to load until you see a screen with a cab, a driver's ID card, and some people standing on the street.

Click anywhere on the image to start playing.

Please be aware that because of the game's many components, on older machines with slower connections, it may take several minutes to load.

Please also note that if a lot of people are playing the game at once, it can be very taxing to our server. Therefore, if you leave the game idle for more than five minutes, it will time out and end itself.

Here's how it works. If you've left your game idle for more than four minutes, a pop-up window will appear to let you know that you have a limited time before your idle game will be ended. If you activate the game by answering a question, the window will disappear, and you can continue playing. If you do not click on the screen by the time limit, your game will end.

The game consists of multiple-choice questions displayed against the front seat of the cab. Each question is illustrated by a photograph or drawing to provide a hint. You can click on the arrow in the image frame to hide or display the image.

The questions will be asked in random order within each round, and no matter the length of the game you're playing, you shouldn't see the same question twice. However, if you end a game and start a new one, you will probably see some repeated questions.

Each question has three possible answers: A, B, or C. Choose one as your answer by clicking on the button of the letter you've chosen. With each answer, your cab driver will turn around and tell you whether or not you're correct. If you're right, you'll be rewarded with a factoid telling you more. If you're wrong, you can try different answers until you get the correct answer. You don't advance in the game until you click on the correct answer.
Once you get the question right, click the "Next Question" button to advance the game.

Each answer, right or wrong, increases the amount on your meter by 25 cents. If you're right, your fare will go up 25 cents and you'll advance one move; if you're wrong, your fare will just go up 25 cents. If you give the wrong answer more than once for the same question, it will still add 25 cents to your meter each time. You'll be given as many chances as you want to get each question right, but remember that your fare will climb with every answer. You can check your fare by clicking on the meter to make it bigger.

The short game, with six rounds, has a fare limit of $15. The medium game, with nine rounds, has a fare limit of $20. The long game, with 12 rounds, has a fare limit of $40.

At some point during each round, you'll get our betting question, "Wanna Bet?" That's where you get a chance to lower your fare by betting that you'll get the next question right in one shot.

Bet that you'll get the next question right and you can shrink your fare down by roughly a quarter, a half, or three-quarters of what's on the meter. Get it wrong, and your meter will go up by the same proportion. Bet smart -- you'll only get one chance at the question. You can also decide not to bet, and the question will simply increase your meter by 25 cents whether you're right or wrong.

The closer you get to your destination and the end of the game, the more careful you should be about not running out of money. You may find that at a certain point, even if you answer every question right, you'll still reach your limit before you get to the finish line. That's when betting can come in very handy.

After six questions, the round will end, and you'll enter a new round with a different time period and driver. Start the new round as you began the game, by clicking on the cab door.
Keep track of your progress through the game by looking at the map. Your position along the route is represented by a flashing star. You can make the map bigger or smaller by clicking on it.
If you hit the fare limit before reaching your destination, you lose, and the game is over.

If you reach your destination without reaching your fare limit, you win!

If you've got a lot of money left on your meter, you might even qualify to add your initials to our High Tippers page!
