Douglas Kmiec: Faith Informs Politics

Pepperdine University Professor of Constitutional Law Douglas Kmiec, a well-known opponent of abortion, shocked his fellow Roman Catholics when he announced his endorsement of Barack Obama. Because of that endorsement, a priest denied Kmiec communion. Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony said the denial was "indefensible." Kmiec describes his feelings about the incident and says it was a "teachable moment." Also, he says it's appropriate to examine how a candidate's religious beliefs affect his or her politics.

Separation of Curch and State is necessary if we are not to become another Iran. The law merely gives women the right to choose it does not require that they have an abortion. It is up to the Church to educate their members and then the rest is up to their individual consciense. No priest, bishop, cardinal, or even the pope can tell any individual that they sin, much less deny him the host. This priest was way out of line.

To insist that we elect a candidate on one issue is to oversimplify an important decision that should be arrived at by each individual after considering all the issues. Religious need to stay out of politics!

Shame on mahoney. Where does kathy get the idea that someone can't be denied Communion? Is she a Catholic? If so, she should consult someone who actually knows their Faith. she obviously thinks religion is a sunday morning event only. As for separation of church/state, where are guaranteed the free EXERCISE of our religion. Exercise is active. Not only sitting in church listening to a homily. We are free to ACT on the homily. Kathy should refrain from Communion until she becomes obedient.
