Americans are giving less to churches and more to other kinds of causes, according to a new report from Giving USA and the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. Donations to religious groups fell 1.6 percent from 2012 to 2013, despite the fact that charitable giving overall was up 3 percent. Among the groups receiving increased giving: education, the arts and humanities, and environmental and animal protection organizations.
