The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has elected its first openly gay bishop, Reverend R. Guy Erwin. Erwin will oversee churches in southern California. In a controversial vote four years ago, the ELCA changed its policy to allow gay and lesbian clergy. Since then, some 600 congregations have left the four-million-member denomination.
