UCC Clergy Sue North Carolina Over Free Exercise of Religion and Ban on Gay Marriage

gay-marriage-HEAD-smThe United Church of Christ and several local clergy filed an unusual lawsuit this week arguing that North Carolina’s ban on same-sex marriage violates their religious freedom. Many groups oppose gay marriage on religious grounds. But this lawsuit claims that because performing marriages is a religious act, the state is denying clergy who support gay marriage the ability to exercise their faith.

Marriage should not be a religious act. The marriage should be a civil act only-isn’t it a civil act anyway since you have to get a marriage license? Once the marriage has taken place in a civil setting, then the couple can have a religious ceremony if they so want. If they so want! This is the way it is done in many countries and should be done this way in the States, also.
