The California Council of Churches supports Proposition 19, a state ballot measure to legalize marijuana, but there are some religious leaders who do not.
Some churches are struggling in these difficult economic times as they face layoffs, foreclosure, distress sales, and other signs of serious financial trouble. (Originally aired June 19, 2009)
She started a support group for women with emotional problems and histories of sexual abuse, and she wants to earn degrees in social work and theological studies to help others like them.
"Foreclosure is a possibility and something we are concerned about," says Rev. Jane Galloway of Long Beach, California. "If we are unable to make our mortgage payment on time, the default process can be filed and a foreclosure proceeding could begin."
A religion reporter and a political analyst discuss the president's nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the US Supreme Court and the California Supreme Court's decision to uphold Proposition 8 banning gay marriage.
The issue of same sex marriage has divided not just society at large, says Mormon church scholar Bob Rees. "It's divided churches, it's divided families, and some individuals are divided within themselves."
