In most of the world, the poor and sick are ignored. In Lourdes, they are number one, and people say they are drawn there because they believe it is a place of great faith.
In 1858, a peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous said she saw "a lady dressed in white" in Lourdes, now an international pilgrimage destination that hosts more than 5 million visitors a year.
