Program 2: THE RESTLESS PLANET

With stunning imagery and amazing first-person stories of survival, THE RESTLESS PLANET, the second episode of SAVAGE EARTH, takes viewers into the jaws of some of the most notorious earthquakes of the 20th century to look at their causes, the costs, and the communities they have devastated in the blink of an eye.

The 1989 Loma Prieta quake dropped a freeway on Dorothy Otto (2.7 MB).

The hour begins with a quake that still resonates strongly in recent American memory.  On October 17th, 1989, a chunk of the San Andreas Fault 60 miles down the coast from San Francisco lurched six feet northwards. In a chilling testament to the random destructiveness of earthquakes and the fragility of even the most solid human structures, Dorothy Otto recalls her incredible experience of being trapped under Oakland's Cypress Highway, its upper deck collapsed.
 

The program also travels to Mexico City, where a 1985 earthquake devastated the world's largest metropolis, and to Kobe, Japan -- destroyed in one of the costliest natural disasters in history -- in an effort to understand how earthquakes behave and to assess the risks for people living in regions where quakes are likely to strike.
