The cooper, a craftsman who makes and repairs wooden barrels, casks and tubs, would have been highly valued on a Viking homestead. Sturdy wooden tubs and barrels were used on the farms to store away cheese, milk, and meat.

Archaeologists not only excavated structures such as houses, cow sheds, stables, but also Viking graves located in churchyards. The human bones and clothing found in graves have helped scientists understand why the Vikings disappeared.

Thought to be the remains of a bishop of the church at Gardar, one of the most powerful churches in Greenland, the grave also held a walrus ivory crosier and gold ring.
