 | Vikings in Greenland
Greenland was first settled in 985 by Eric the Red who had been forced to fleea Viking settlement in nearby Iceland. According to legend, he called the place "Greenland," because he thought men would be drawn there if it had a pleasant name.
Twenty-five ships of colonists later set out to join him, but only fourteenarrived. They established two colonies, one in the east and one in thewest. Their descendants, who never exceeded 6,000 people, inhabitedGreenland for the next four centuries.
