On the night of the disaster, the Hindenburg flew through a storm system just before attempting to land in Lakehurst, New Jersey. During a storm, large amounts of static electricity are created in the atmosphere. This condition is created when particles in the air rub against each other. One particular form of static electricity is called a precipitation charge and occurs when moisture falls from the sky and rubs against other particles in the air.
