 | The Anasazi lived in a harsh desert environment characterized bytorrid summers, frozen winters, and a brief growing season. Yet despite theseinhospitable conditions, they built hundreds of towns and villages over a distance of fifty thousand square miles. These ancient settlements are some of the largest of their kind in North America.
Throughout the Southwest, the Anasazi formed complex communities made up of farmers, hunters, gatherers, traders, craftsmen, and warriors. They built hundreds of miles of roads in straight lines across the desert, linking settlements, and dominating the terrain. These roads, invisible from the ground today, were discovered by aerial photography in the 1970s.
