The Southwest Chaco Canyon Pueblo Bonito Kiva
Map
Beneath the central courtyard of the town is an enormous Kiva, large enough to hold hundreds of people. To enter this sacred meeting place, people slipped through a smoke hole in the roof, then climbed down a long ladder to the bottom.

Wooden benches lined the walls of the Kiva and large pillars supported a log roof. There is a small indentation at one end of this wall that may have been the area of focus during religious events. It is believed that the Anasaziperformed their sacred rituals here, deep inside the Kiva, enclosed by thick masonry walls.
