Watch these video clips with your students. The questions that accompany them can be discussed in class or printed out and answered individually by your students.

Video Clip 1 Influenza is introduced as the mass murderer of 1918. To fully understand this historic flu pandemic several important questions must be answered.

  • What is a "super virus"?

  • What made the 1918 flu epidemic different from "normal" flu seasons?

  • What questions must scientist answer to fully understand the 1918 flu pandemic?

  • Why is it important to understand the genetic basis of the 1918 influenza virus?

Video Clip 2 The virus spread rapidly throughout the world with two distinguishing characteristics. One was a particular symptom that it caused and the other was who was most likely to become its victims.

  • How fast and where did the flu spread?

  • What is meant by the term "heliotrope cyanosis"? What causes it?

  • What is the current explanation of why this flu attacked mostly the young and healthy?

Video Clip 3 The virus was definitely an animal virus. This clip gives some insight into how the virus actually works and why it is so successful at what it does.
