Dred Scott sued for his freedom in a Circuit Court in St. Louis, Missouri. Scott won his case. However, in the judgment of the Supreme Court, written by Chief Justice Taney, the verdict was reversed and the case sent back to Circuit Court. Taney's opinion on the matter declared that blacks were not citizens and were not guaranteed protection of the federal government or courts.
