Introducing his article on election methods in the South, former slave, union soldier, and U.S. congressman Robert Smalls condemns the corruption of the election process in South Carolina. His outrage is directed at the violence perpetrated by the Ku Klux Klan and rifle clubs and Southern democrats who he accuses of fraud.
