Voices of Deafness Transcript
Jon, 10, Student

"I consider myself deaf because I have always been deaf and I don't hear everything clearly as normal people hear them ... When I am playing sports, there's like I can ... there's music in the background, so I can hear the music more than I can hear the coach talking ... Like, let's say the coach is talking, there's music in the background and I can't really hear him, so he tells me to come up to him and he explains what to do. Or he just tells me to go to the end of the line and watch until I know what to do. ... In the ocean, my friends are talking to me and I don't wear this in the ocean cause it can break and I am a very good lip reader, actually. So, sometimes when the teacher is not looking and one of my friends starts to lip read across the room, then I can understand them. ... But I don't like to put it on very early in the morning ... Silence. Peaceful."
