Voices of Deafness Transcript
Sandee, Jon's Mother
"We come from a hearing family. There is no one in the family who is deaf. And to not be able to communicate orally, I really thought was gonna cut him off of the family, or neighbors, or the community, our neighborhood ... After the surgery, just in the most innocent way, people would come up to me in an airport, in a mall, and start frantically signing, attempting to speak, letting me know how could I do that to my son? How could I give him an implant? It doesn't work, it's butchering ... you know, and I would just say "OK, fine," you know? It does work. It works for him ... I do understand where they are coming from, in a sense because they really are in a really isolated group and they have their views of something and it's just that they just don't see how the real world functions. They remain very isolated ... My son would have been at the deaf school, had he not had an implant. So this is the next generation of deaf children who will not be following in the footsteps of those adults. They are really doing something totally different ... Because of the implant that he can hear so much, there's no reason not to be part of the hearing community, and there're so many more opportunities and options available in the hearing world because the world is a hearing place. So the fact that he's not part of a deaf world is really of little consequence. "
