The Decision Transcript
Shelby's Mother: Shelby wants to sing to you.
Shelby: (singing) "Wheels on a bus go 'round and 'round, 'round and 'round, 'round and 'round. The wheels on a bus go 'round and 'round all through the town." (laughs)
Shelby's Mother: Oh, excuse me!
Nita Artinian: As the interpreter, did you understand what Shelby was saying? Were the words clear to you?
Sign Interpreter: Yes, I understand her clearly. Her voice was very clear, yes.
Nita Artinian: OK, I know that we're from the deaf world and you're from the hearing world, but I want to know if you did any research to find out about deaf history or sign language before you had the implant done on your daughter. Or did you just go ahead with it without any real information?
Shelby's Mother: I guess we both felt that there were more options available to her if she were able to hear. That life for her would be easier, more normal, where she wouldn't have any restrictions.
Peter Artinian: Does Shelby think of herself as a deaf person, or a hearing person?
Nita Artinian: Yes, I'd like to know that. What is her view of herself? Do you have any idea how she views herself with the cochlear implant?
Shelby's Dad: She views herself as a hearing person. Without a doubt, she definitely does. She does not know the deaf life at all.
