Essay CONTEST: RULES AND REGULATIONS

HOW TO ENTER:

Log on to THE STORY OF THE JEWS WITH SIMON SCHAMA website to obtain THE STORY OF THE JEWS Online Contest (the “Contest”) entry form and to enter.  You must be in grades 9 through 11 (public, private or home school) and between 13 and 18 years of age at the time of entry.  You will have to complete a brief essay of 500 words or less describing how a particular story has affected your sense of personal or cultural identity.  The full essay question will be posted on the series website.

You may create and submit your essay under the supervision of a history instructor; however, you must be the sole and independent author of your essay. You must submit your essay on the Contest entry form.

The Contest begins on March 6, 2014 and ends on June 13, 2014 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.  Entries must be submitted on the Contest entry form via THE STORY OF THE JEWS WITH SIMON SCHAMA website.  You may only enter once, and any additional entries will not be eligible.  You will receive an email from Sponsor confirming receipt of your entry.  Entries submitted on or after June 14, 2014 will not be accepted.

The Contest is sponsored by WNET, 825 Eighth Avenue, New York, NY 10019 (“Sponsor”).

HOW TO WIN:

No purchase necessary.  To enter, you must submit your essay on the Contest entry form via THE STORY OF THE JEWS WITH SIMON SCHAMA website.  To be eligible to win, you must meet the eligibility requirements specified below at the time of entry, and your essay must answer the Contest question posted on the series website and adhere to the essay length requirements.  From the eligible entries received, 5 Grand Prize Winners and 20 First Prize Winners will be selected by THE STORY OF THE JEWS National Advisory Board, which consists of historians, history educators, museum educators, and public television staff members.  Essays will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Adherence to chosen topic;
  • Clear, compelling, and original response to each component of the essay question;
  • Essay organization (introduction, supporting evidence, conclusion); and
  • Mechanics (i.e. spelling, grammar, and punctuation).

Winners will be notified by email no later than August 15, 2014.  The names and schools of the winners and selected outstanding essays may be posted on THE STORY OF THE JEWS WITH SIMON SCHAMA website.

PRIZES:

Grand Prize – 5 winners

  • Roundtrip airfare to New York City for winner and an accompanying adult (approximate retail value: up to $1200 per person);
  • Two nights’ accommodations in New York City for winner and an accompanying adult (approximate retail value: up to $275 per night, per person);
  • Tour of The Jewish Museum of New York led by series host Simon Schama that highlights the history of the Jewish people (approximate retail value for museum admission: up to $30);
  • Luncheon reception (approximate retail value: up to $50 per person); and
  • One THE STORY OF THE JEWS WITH SIMON SCHAMA companion book, personally inscribed by series host Simon Schama (approximate retail value: $50).

The 3-day and 2-night trip to New York City for the 5 Grand Prize Winners will take place between September 1, 2014 and June 1, 2015, subject to Sponsor’s sole discretion.  The roundtrip airfare for the 5 Grand Prize Winners will be provided between the major U.S. airport nearest the particular Grand Prize Winner’s residence and New York City (airports determined by Sponsor in its sole discretion).  Sponsor reserves the right to substitute prize(s) of equal or greater value.  The prize (in whole or in part) may not be assigned, transferred, changed or redeemed for cash.  In order to be awarded the prize, winners must submit a signed prize acceptance confirmation form, acknowledging agreement to the rules and regulations of this Contest, such form to be provided by Sponsor, and, in the case of any winners under the age of 18 years, to be signed by a parent or guardian.  Unclaimed prizes may not be awarded.

GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS:

Any federal, state and local taxes, fees and surcharges on prizes won will be the sole responsibility of the winner.  Entry forms, including essays, will be solely Sponsor’s property and will not be acknowledged or returned.  Neither Sponsor nor PBS is responsible for lost, late, misdirected, incomplete, or illegible entries or mail.  Neither Sponsor nor PBS is responsible for any claims, injuries, losses or damages of any kind resulting from Contest participation; the awarding, acceptance, use, misuse, possession, loss or misdirection of the prize; participation in any prize-related activity; or from computer malfunction.  Sponsor’s decisions are final and non-appealable.  Entrants agree that acceptance of any prize constitutes the grant to Sponsor of an unconditional right to use the winners’ names, addresses (city and state only), and essays for any promotion, publicity, marketing, and advertisement; to provide winners’ names to students’ school or community education group; and to release the winners’ first names and addresses (city and state only) upon written request.  However, the possibility of winning is not affected by the withholding of permission to use such information.  This Contest is governed by the laws of the State of New York with venue in New York, NY.

ELIGIBILITY:

The Contest is open to all legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia in grades 9 through 11 (public, private or home school) and between 13 and 18 years of age at the time of entry, except where prohibited by law.  Employees of WNET and its subsidiaries, PBS, PBS member stations, THE STORY OF THE JEWS WITH SIMON SCHAMA funders, and their immediate family members and persons living in the same household of such individuals are not eligible.  All federal, state and local laws and regulations apply.  Not valid in Puerto Rico or US Virgin Islands.  Void where prohibited.

DISQUALIFICATION:

Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any person tampering with the entry process, or otherwise in violation of these Contest rules.  Sponsor further reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel, suspend, terminate or modify the Contest if not capable of completion as planned, including due to force majeure, technical corruption, or any other causes beyond Sponsor’s control that corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of the Contest.

RELEASE AND INDEMNITY:

By participating in the Contest, entrant agrees to release, discharge and hold harmless Sponsor from and against any and all claims, liability for any injury, including but not limited to personal injury, bodily injury (including without limitation wrongful death or disability), property damage, or loss or damage of any other kind arising in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from delivery, non-delivery, acceptance, participation or use of a prize, or from participation in this Contest, or any contest-related activity, whether or not such injury, loss or damage arises in whole or in part from the negligence of Sponsor, its affiliates, subsidiaries, and agencies and their respective directors, officers, employees and agents and any and all Internet servers and access providers from any and all liability with respect to the prize won and participation in the Contest.

Entrant further agrees that s/he shall pay and indemnify and hold Sponsor and its officers, trustees, assignees, agents, licensees, and employees harmless from and against all claims, losses, costs, expenses, settlements, demands, and liabilities of every kind, including reasonable attorneys’ fees and expenses, arising out of or incurred by reason of the use of the name submitted with the entry, the content of the entry, or the inaccuracy, alleged breach, or actual breach of any representation, warranty, covenant, agreement, or undertaking entrant has made herein.

PRIVACY:

Except as otherwise specified above, any and all personally identifiable information collected in connection with this Contest will be used by Sponsor solely for the purpose of administering the Contest.
