Permission from Supreme Court Curator
Justice Harry Blackmun, a Nixon appointee, was appointed to the Court in May 1970, as the Court's 1969-1970 term was winding down. This cartoon from THE WASHINGTON STAR, published in October 1970 -- at the start of the Court's new term, Blackmun's first -- depicts the justices as overwhelmed by issues like abortion and segregation. Blackmun liked the cartoon so much he kept it on his wall.
