No matter how I am feeling, there’s a John Mellancamp song and lyrics to describe it. It’s like finding that birthday, anniversary, or whatever the occasion be -card that has just the ‘right’ verse to describe how you feel. What is noteworthy, is you can listen to lyrics he wrote in the 80s that have a social statement about the times and – sadly – they still apply to the ‘now.’ I’d give anything to sit down and talk to him about the stories behind his songs that really touch the soul. Maybe that will be found in his ‘On the Rural Route 7609′ – I hope so. Thank you, John Mellancamp for countless hours of enjoyment -some tears (Between a Laugh and a Tear) you’ve given.

As a native of Indiana, John’s song: Small Town, was very special to me. Living in Phoenix, Arizona i got so homesick for the peace & serenity of Just being, taking a walk, in the woods, (hollars, streams, slate hillsides) i remember listenin’ to this song, watchin’ a home video of the area out on shilo, road by lake lemon, my special friday nite after working concrete all day was my video of my smalltown, & ol’ John singin’ and after a couple beers, Well, my son & i are back home again, in Indiana…thank you Mr. Mellencamp for such a meaningful, pleasent song!
