For the third episode of Tavis Smiley Reports, Tavis hit the streets of New Orleans with Academy Award-winning director Jonathan Demme, who has been chronicling the survivors of Hurricane Katrina for the past five years.

While you may know Demme for his work on Beloved, Philadelphia, Rachel Getting Married and The Silence of the Lambs, for which he won an Oscar, you may not know that the New York native is also an activist, who has produced and directed politically-conscious documentaries like Haiti Dreams of Democracy and Right to Return.

Here, Demme talks about the amazing stories he’s uncovered in five years of filming in New Orleans in Katrina’s aftermath.
