The Right to Return Then and Now – Guardians of the Flame

This episode of Tavis Smiley Reports is not the first time that Tavis has teamed up with Academy Award-winning director Jonathan Demme to document the story of New Orleans residents who are rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina and the floods that destroyed the city.

In 2007, the pair produced The Right to Return: New Home Movies from the Lower 9th Ward, where they caught up with New Orleans natives and Hurricane Katrina survivors Herreast Harrison and her daughter Cherice Harrison-Nelson.

In this 2006 interview, Harrison-Nelson says, “They told me I should go and live in Houston. New Orleans is my home. Why shouldn’t I come back here? This is where I grew up.”

To find out where the Harrison family ended up, tune in to New Orleans: Been in the Storm Too Long, Wednesday, July 21st at 8/7c.
