A LOOK BACK

A LOOK BACK: Toni Morrison

June 7th, 2012, by Carla Amurao

Born Chloe Ardelia Wofford, novelist and professor Toni Morrison is a Nobel Prize winner and Pulitzer Prize recipient. Her novels and their themes and detailed characters gained notoriety throughout her career. And on May 29, 2012, she was also one of the cultural icons awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Obama.

Morrison sat down with us on December 31, 2008 to discuss her text, A Mercy, and share a bit about her creative process, her thoughts on changing the institution of slavery as we know it and supporting President Obama in his 2008 presidential campaign.

Watch the 2008 conversation and share your thoughts.

“We have to work…and we can’t be afraid. That’s the first line [in the book]. Don’t be afraid.”
- Toni Morrison on moving past racism and slavery and making change, 2008
