On Repeat: The War on Drugs

August 30th, 2011, byJeremy Freed

This week’s obsession is a band from Philly called The War on Drugs and, specifically, their newest album “Slave Ambient.” I got onto this band last winter through their work with fellow Philly rocker Kurt Vile (War on Drugs singer-guitarist Adam Granduciel also plays in Vile’s band, The Violators), and they quickly became my favorite new group. While their first two albums, “Wagonwheel Blues” and “Future Weather” were both excellent in very distinct ways, the third seems to combine the strengths of the first two into something altogether greater than the sum of its parts.

Having been lucky enough to see them on tour in Toronto last week, I’ve been listening to the new album nonstop ever since and no doubt driving my friends, neighbors and colleagues a bit mental ever since. Nonetheless, The War on Drugs is one of the best bands around right now, and I need to you to know about them.

Here’s one of the best songs from the new album below, and you can check out their Web site here.
