The first reading of the Emancipation Proclamation before the cabinet
1863
  • President Lincoln signs the Emancipation Proclamation in his Cabinet Room, which will eventually become known as the Lincoln Bedroom.

  • During the Civil War, Mary Lincoln goes on a spending spree in an effort to decorate the house. She ends up spending over $20,000 on furniture, out of which she buys the famous Lincoln bed.

  • President Lincoln is assassinated at Ford's Theater. His body lies in state in the East Room after the assassination.
