Politics: Northwestern Equatuer is the native province of both Jean-Pierre Bemba and Mobutu Sese Seko, the latter of whom built a opulent palace in the remote far-north town of Gbadolite. Bemba won the province overwhelmingly, followed second by Nzanga Mobutu, son of the former dictator. During the war, rebel leader Bemba dominated the region militarily and grew wealthy from gold and coffee. Mobutu Jr. has returned to the town of Gbadolite, from which he is trying to revive remnants of his father’s political apparatus. The two candidates are related: Nzanga Mobutu is married to a sister of Jean-Pierre Bemba.

Natural Resources: Home to an equatorial forest, Equateur has vast timber resources that are underexploited due to the lack of infrastructure and proper transportation in the country. It also has gold and diamonds.
