Politics: Joseph Kabila decisively won the southeast province of Katanga. The once-profitable state-run mine, Gécamines, is in the south. As the birthplace of Laurent Kabila, the Katanganese enjoyed some favoritism during his reign. The secession-prone province is currently wracked by armed conflicts between the Mai-Mai (water-water), the rebel group formed by Kabila during the Congo War, and the army. Many of the victims are civilians who are brutalized or displaced.

Natural Resources: A farming and mining region rich with mineral resources — cobalt, copper, diamonds, tin — Katanga contributes a significant amount to government coffers. The province has up to 10 percent of the world’s copper and 50 percent of its cobalt. However, corruption, neglect and conflict have sharply reduced the production of the state-owned Gécamines in this rich copper belt.
