Facts about Angola

  • Angola is emerging from a 27 year civil war. (PBS, Wide Angle fact sheet)

  • Angola is facing a public health crisis. Refugees who fled from the hostilities during the civil war are now coming back home with HIV and AIDS. This situation may be largely attributable to the fact that the countries bordering Angola, where many sought refuge during the civil war have been ravaged by AIDS. At the end of 2001, each carried a high percentage of AIDS per population; Zambia, 21.5%, Namibia, 22.5%, Botswana, 38.8%, South Africa, 20.1%.(PBS, Wide Angle fact sheet)

  • At least 1 million people in Angola have AIDS. Because refugees are still streaming back into the country it is impossible at this time to estimate how many people are actually living with HIV and AIDS, the number will surely rise. (PBS, Wide Angle fact sheet)
