Interactive Map: Headscarf Headlines Around the World

Women's wearing of the hijab has become an important and often divisive social issue in many countries. While many Muslim countries enforce the wearing of headscarves as part of Islamic law and culture, others have banned the practice or excluded it from important social spheres, like the broadcast media. Similarly, although some Western nations have forbidden wearing the hijab in some settings, such as schools, many others have placed great emphasis on tolerance of dress as a form of religious expression. The variety of responses among different societies -- sometimes right next door to one another -- can be surprising. Use this interactive map to find out more.
