| These Kenyan children are playing in a river of sewage near a Nairobi slum. This is an ideal breeding ground for malarial mosquitoes. According to Reuters, each year up to 3.5 million Kenyan children under five are infected with the disease, which kills up to 26,000 Kenyans annually. Worldwide, nearly 1.2 billion people lack access to clean water according to Worldwatch Institute. This is an acute problem in densely populated countries, such as India, where human waste often contaminates water supplies. (In India, 84 percent of the population lacks a toilet.) Polluted water, in turn contributes to high rates of infectious disease, the chief cause of death in developing countries.
