Lawlessness

Lawlessness

A young girl in Rio de Janeiro looks at sculptures of children constructed entirely out of shell casings. The artist gathered the casings -- left over from countless shootings -- at one of Rio's favelas, or shantytowns. The statues were erected as a protest against Rio's rampant violence, which according to Reuters has claimed more than 1.5 million lives in the past 20 years. Poverty is the root cause of such violence. According to Worldwatch Institute, nearly one in five humans worldwide lives on less than $1 per day. While the bulk of these "extreme poor" live in rural areas, massive urban migrations have in recent years increased the urban share of poverty and led to the formation of dangerous slums.
