| According to the Associated Press, the mother of this 17-month-old (who weighed 68 pounds when the picture was taken) feared that he suffered from a glandular disorder. The child's doctors, however, suspected poor diet. While many in the developing world lack sufficient food, doctors caution that their counterparts in rich countries are increasingly consuming too much, or too much of the wrong things. Exposed to cheap, plentiful foods with high sugar and fat content, one-quarter of American children are obese, according to 60 MINUTES. Throughout the 1990s, claims Worldwatch Institute, poor diet, insufficient exercise and smoking have contributed to the steady rise of "diseases of affluence" -- cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
