This 2000 photo shows a six-year-old orphaned Thai boy who contracted the virus from his mother. According to the BBC, one million of Thailand's 60 million people are now infected with AIDS. While AIDS infection rates have been reduced in the developed world, the disease is spreading quickly in poor countries. By 2000 infection rates had reached 20 percent in South Africa, 25 percent in Zimbabwe and 36 percent in Botswana.
