Industrial Pollution

Industrial Pollution

An oil pipeline leaks into the surrounding wetlands near the Russian city of Usinsk, close to the Arctic Circle. According to Greenpeace, Russia's pipeline system leaks the equivalent of 375 Exxon Valdez tankers every year. Soil and underground water have long absorbed the refuse from human activity, whether it be garbage, sewage or our own dead. In the past century, however, scientists have introduced thousands of new chemicals, many of them toxic. Industrial production has meant ever larger quantities of such pollutants, distributed even in remote areas.
