Slums and shantytowns

Despite the fact that the city has long been the center of political and economic activity in Haiti, Port-au-Prince's infrastructure has not kept pace with the population explosion. Here, people sit outside of their homes, adjacent to an open sewer, as a United Nations team hauls away garbage (Port-au-Prince's slums have no regular trash removal services). Many inhabitants of the city's slum areas -- neighborhoods such as Cité Soleil and La Saline -- live in corrugated metal-roofed shacks, sometimes with as many as 12 people living in a single, 8-square-foot room. Port-au-Prince's poor are particularly subject to political violence. Lavalas supporters (many of whom make their homes in the city's poorest areas) and those who live near them have been harrassed by the police, while Lavalas opponents have suffered at the hands of the "Chimeres," violent pro-Aristide street gangs.
