Northern Areas map Administrated by Pakistan, the Northern Areas remain in limbo because of the continued dispute with India over Kashmir. It is bounded by Indian-controlled Kashmir in the southeast, China in the north, and Afghanistan in the northwest. The region has four major mountain ranges -- Himalayas, Pamir, Hindu Kush, and Karakoram, which includes the world's second-highest peak, K2 -- and the longest glaciers.
