Punjab map The most populous province, Punjab ("five rivers" in Sanskrit), is named for the rivers that traverse it -- Sutlej, Ravi, Beas, Jhelum, and Chenab. The rivers are all branches of the Indus and have been harnessed to make Punjab an extremely fertile region. The major part of Punjab was apportioned to Pakistan in 1947, with India, which lies to the east, gaining the rest. Punjab borders all the other federal provinces of Pakistan.
