Future for Lebanon

Interactive Map: Middle East Governments (2005)

Now that the commotion of the Cedar Uprising uprising and Syria's subsequent military withdrawal have settled into the calmer civic ritual of the recent Lebanese elections, the questions remain: Has democracy really come to Lebanon? Will the nation be able to overcome the sectarian struggles that have plunged it into chaos in the past? Similar questions confront the rest of the Middle East. Elections have also taken place recently in the Palestinian Territories, Afghanistan, and Iraq, and commentators have suggested Lebanon is merely part of a tide of democracy washing across the Middle East. Take a look inside our map to learn more about the region's governments.
