I think that the issue of the rain forest is more important than people realize. Particularly with so many congested cities around the world that are constantly polluting the air. It is bad enough that the Amazon is not being protected as much as it should be.
On another note, it seems likes those of us who voted for Obama, that there is a lot of international hope extended from his campaign. I think is a real humanitarian and will be able to help 3 world countries better than Bush. Now for those Americans who don't like to share, don't worry, there is usually more money than the public is ever aware that the government has, the problem is that is usually stolen by politicians. Just think about all the money the Bush family made from their oil related companies while the gas prices were soaring through the roof! Hopefully Obama will have more integrity than most to steal from the American people and give corporations deals that are to the detriment of this country.

There is a touch of desperation in Gambino's argument about intervening in DRC in order to save trees, and by extention the planet. In truth, there would be very little 'in it' for the US, or any other western country, were they to intervene. That is not to say we shouldn't intervene. DRC has been consistently the most failed state in Africa, along perhaps with Somalia, and the cost has been the lives of millions of people (4 million in DRC between 1998 and 2003). To turn around Congo's fortunes, there has to be a long-term plan to make the country a functioning, viable state.

Incisive analysis of the various conflicts within the country, conflicts that don't just involve soldiers. It sounds like the UN force can provide help with respect to both the fighting and the humanitarian issues.

Very interesting piece, notably about the Congo Basin Forest. I had no idea of the importance of the Congo with regard to climate change.

Gambino's analysis is a bit depressing as one wonders what is the way forward ? I wonder if any other African countries could exercise a beneficial influence.
